- GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1729-E.I.C. Year TERTIO. London Mint. George II. PCGS AU-53.
S-3664; Fr-333; KM-571.2. Young Head. Softly circulated, with an even pattern of wear across the elements, this impressive example renders charmingly original eye appeal and a problem-free nature that is certain to appeal. One is immediately drawn to the bold letters "E-I-C-" underneath the bust of George II, the universally known initials of the East India Company. Produced from specie supplied by the company to the Royal Mint, these monumental pieces serve as evidence of the vast amount of wealth and influence that the company was able to garner from its far-flung adventures in Asia. Britain was plagued by a general coinage shortage throughout the 18th Century, partly because of the outflow of currency to the ever-increasing number of Crown and Company territories and colonies. Despite its paucity of usage in commence, the 5 Guineas was not immune and is a SCARCE survivor today. Some original mint bloom remains on the surfaces, and light marking of a mostly inconsequential nature is noted for completeness. A strong example for the advanced British collector.
Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
