Low Mintage Tempo Era Oban JAPAN. Oban (10 Ryo), ND Tempo Era (ca. 1837-60). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Fr-6; JNDA-09-9 (5); Bank of Japan-Vol. 4 # 40; JV-A6; Hartill-8.12; KM-C-24.2. Weight: 164.08 gms. 156.38 x 94.32 mm. Mintage: 1,887. Security edge. A rather RAREissue from this series with a low mintage; the limited quantity of the Tempo or Tenpo era Obans coupled with the export of large size gold from Japan after the opening for trade with the outside world has left the collecting community with somewhat of a small number of survivors. The obverse Kiri stamps are clear with bold details of the Paulownia flowers, which exhibit interesting characteristics in the outer circular borders where uneven areas appear due to the underlying hammer marks. The reverse Kiri stamps are all neatly applied with the top stamp exhibiting a slight central weakness, while the control marks are deeply impressed and crisp. The ink signature exhibits minimal loss, and the surfaces are complemented by a lovely pale golden color that deepens in the protected areas of the stamps and yields to hints of iridescence around the edges. The surfaces display light signs of handling consistent for the grade, which include a long thin surface abrasion in the lower left side of the upper half of the obverse. Overall, a handsome representative of this highly collectible type with an apppearance that is sure to gratify its next owner. Estimate: $20,000 - $25,000. Provenance: From the Pinnacle Collection.
