- THE ARIZONA DIME COLLECTION A GEM example of this KEY date! Only 264,000 Mercury dimes came off the press in 1916 in Denver, the lowest mintage of the inaugural year of this always popular series. Collecting by mintmarks was still in its infancy and its lower mintage did not result in widespread hoarding of the date. While a decent number were saved as first year issues, the vast majority of the date slipped into circulation, where they would remain. Low grade coins are eagerly sought by budget-minded collectors; GEM Mint State pieces are always in demand from serious collectors. The presently offered piece is well struck and well preserved. The central band is split, but the top and bottom portions are not fully rounded at the split, thus keeping it from an FB holder. A satiny mint frost radiates boldly all over, highlighting a golden-rose, amber-peach, and emerald-olive patina that shows hints of pastel purple and orange that come out, especially on the reverse when rotated in a light. The eye appeal is alluring, and we have no doubt that this coin will delight anyone looking to upgrade their set. PCGS 5, NGC 7. There is a single MS66 graded finer. The most recent example brought $28,800 in March 2023 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $34,000. Worthy of a wonderful set of Mercury dimes, or box of twenty class keys. Either way you will be delighted by the eye appeal of this GEM. Cert. Number 26108258 PCGS # 4906
