- From the South Texas Collection. B-5, BB-65. Ranking among the FINEST known examples of this early dollar variety, this coin is a borderline Mint State piece that has a distinctive Prooflike flash that arrests the eye. Sharply struck from an earlier state of the dies where the die flaw above the I is lighter than usually seen. The definition on both obverse and reverse is exceptionally crisp and full throughout Robert Scot's classic design. All of Liberty's curly locks and drapery folds on her bust are completely visible. The usually weakly struck eagle's breast feathers likewise are boldly rendered from an exacting blow from the screw press. A delicate, mottled toning frames the peripheries, while a gentle, clear gold dusts the more central areas of the design. Only the slightest touch of highpoint friction can be seen, and more than likely acquired from previous owners removing it from an envelope or from jostling in an old collector cabinet, rather than from circulation. As far as marks are concerned, we note only a few microscopic ticks that are well hidden and are visible only under a powerful glass. Needless to say further, the eye appeal of this GEM AU coin is SUPERB and totally original. Only a few examples of this die marriage are known in such lofty grades, Dave Bowers in 2013 estimated perhaps 10-20 coins in AU50 and up. This does not match the Corrado Romano, Garrett, or Eliasberg specimens listed In his list of Notable Specimens. We also know it is not the Alto-Queller coin that was in a MS61 NGC holder last time it sold (April 2008). PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The only relevant auction record we could find in our research was the Cardinal-Hesselgesser Collection coin, a PCGS AU55 CAC that sold in September 2011 for $36,800. This coin is sharper, offers a more intense looking luster, and better overall eye appeal than that coin. We know that when this Prooflike GEM AU58 crosses the block, it will exceed the current Collector's Universe value of $37,500. Expect intense bidding from specialists of early types, silver dollars, and collectors of "sexy" coins--perfect for a box of 20, or any other HIGH END collection! Cert. Number 19902055 PCGS # 6861
