- PHILIPPINES. Pattern 5 Pesetas Struck in Silver, 1855. Paris Mint, By Louis Charles Bouvet. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, VF Details Gold Shield.
Bruce-Pn2; Basso-73; Cal-pg. 785; cf.VG-3419; Forrer-Vol. I, pg. 241. Reeded edge, 37 mm. Bust of Queen Isabella II wearing tiara, braided hair coiled into a single bun held by ribbon, date below with legend around; Reverse: Denomination in two lines above five-pointed star all within wreath flanked by fluer-de-lis on either side, legend above and below. The attribution to the Paris mint with design by Mr. Bouvet can be stated with a fair amount of certainty. In 1852 Bouvet submitted pattern's to Queen Isabella II of Spain for the new coinage of her country which included the unadopted designs for the Philippines 5 Pesetas and the Spanish 20 Reales, both share the same obverse die. This can be further solidified due to the existence of Pattern 5 Franc and Pattern 5 Pesetas/20 Reales mules. Unobtrusive tooling and smoothing around the devices and fields from long ago now toned over. Well struck as would be expected with pleasing medium smokey and russet grey tone throughout. Despite its shortcomings a handsome collectible example with a nice look of the EXTREMELY RAREissue.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
Provenance: From the Ray Czahor Collection.
Ex: Philippine Numismatic & Antiquarian Society Auction, Sept. 24, 2006, lot 117.
