- SWITZERLAND. Geneva. Silver Prize Medal, ND (1799). PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield.
SM-1588; MH-233. Diameter: 42.8 mm. Issued as a prize medal for the schools of Geneva. Obverse: Faith stands under the ineffable name of God, below: the maiden of Wisdom, under a palm tree, presses the milk of Knowledge from her breast; reverse: Latin legend and wreath surround a space left blank for engraving. Dies by C. Wielandy. A boldly struck Medal with pleasing gray to iridescent toning.
Meister & Sonntag, who sold the last specimen we can find in the archives (auction 11, May 2011, lot 611), comment that in 1799 the canton had just been annexed to France and so the arms of Geneva were deleted.
Estimate: $300 - $400.
