- 1876 U.S. Assay Commission medal. Musante GW-869, Baker-347, JK AC-15 Copper, Bronzed. SP-66 (PCGS). 33.7 mm. An exceptionally nice example of this popular and scarce Assay Commission medal. Superb deep mahogany bronze surfaces are boldly prooflike in the fields, and sharp and satiny on the devices. One can easily imagine Baker buying this directly from the Philadelphia Mint, but it is hard to imagine that in more than a century, it seems to have had virtually no handling at all. In these respects, it is an ideal mate to the piece offered next. Easily one of the finest we have ever handled.
