- 1906 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. Proof-58 (PCGS). Sharply to fully defined overall with abundant reflectivity in the fields, the Proof status of this flashy deep gold example is beyond contestation. Wispy marks explain the grade, and it is likely that this coin failed to sell to a contemporary collector and was subsequently released into commercial channels by the Mint. More than 176,000 circulation strike quarter eagles were made in 1906, but only a total of 160 coins were struck in Proof. Survivors from the latter delivery are scarce and number just 100 to 120 in all grades (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018). PCGS# 7932. NGC ID: 288W. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
