- 1771 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 3-71B, W-7680. Rarity-5. GEORGIVS III. VF-25 (PCGS). 116.2 grains. Nice medium brown with good wholesome gloss despite extremely fine granularity under a glass. A good looking coin, both nicer and sharper than this variety usually appears. Obverse aligned to 4 o'clock, reverse to 3 o'clock. Tiny mint clip above VS on obverse. No bad flaws, just a little rim tick just below 9 o'clock on the reverse. Late die state with reverse cud at 11 o'clock. This variety comes in EF but no better. The Kessler-Roper coin, other than its pits, might be the best of these to have sold publicly in the last three decades. Neither the Ringo nor Schettino coins were as nice as this, and the best 1771 of any variety seen by PCGS graded VF-30. A very desirable piece. PCGS# 448.
