- 1889 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-67 (PCGS). Glorious mint luster throughout, with the fields and devices showing slight contrast typical of a mint state issue of this series. The strike is bold on Liberty's head as well as the wreath, with each of the letters and digits crisply impressed as well. Rich coppery-gold with tinges of pale blue near the rims and devices, and a classically elegant patina for the specialist. As often seen the reverse die was rotated about twenty degrees counterclockwise when this piece was struck. Mintage of 2,300 pieces for this particular year, which ended up being the tail end of production for the famous three dollar gold series.
Not only is this coin tied with one other for the finest known of the date as NGC has not graded any finer than MS-66, it is also one of the finest of the entire type from 1854 through 1889. PCGS in their Population Report note 25 grading events at the lofty MS-67 level, with a mere 2 coins graded finer for the series. Thus the present offering is both important for type as well as date and mint connoisseurs.
