An important early Liberty double eagle, a date that is "quite rare and undervalued" in Mint State. Just a handful have been graded at PCGS finer, than this wonderful, essentially CHOICE example. A deep, orange-gold patina is choice and original, accented by a brilliant and bold underlying luster. This coin has a classic "Euro-gold" look, seen on freshly imported gold coins that have been in overseas bank vaults for generations. The devices are well struck with boldly defined details. Mildly abraded surfaces as typically seen there are only a few graded finer, and this coin ranks among the PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census. PCGS 28, NGC 18. No doubt there is much duplication here, as evidenced by the fact that none have sold in nearly seven years--the last PCGS MS62 sold in September 2015! An NGC-graded MS62 sold in February 2021 for $16,800 and the market is stronger today! The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $21,000. Only a handful are graded finer at PCGS, the finest being a 63+. The ONLY MS63 graded by PCGS to ever sell in auction was sold over a decade ago, and would likely cost over $50,000 were one to come up for auction today! Bound for a great collection of Type I double eagles and will see strong bidding for sure! Good luck. Cert. Number 37541112 PCGS # 8908
