- William Barber’s coronet head of Liberty facing left (similar to the portrait used on the famous 1877 $50 Half Union patterns); reverse has the composition of the goloid alloy within a circle of beads, inside a wreath of wheat and cotton. The motto GLORIA EST DEO in a frame above. Stuck on a 25 gram goloid alloy planchet composed of .8958 Silver, .0042 Gold, .100 Copper with reeded edge. Considered to be Rarity-4, it is among the more “common” silver dollar patterns struck. Deep watery mirrors shine in the light and if the very well struck devices had a touch more frost, this coin would be a CAM. A touch of dappled, pale gold tone can be seen on the obverse, The reverse is brilliant and free of any toning. As an R-4, this is a pattern issue that is relatively available. They were struck and distributed among influential people within the government. According to the Pollack reference, “the Mint produced three-piece pattern sets...Only twenty five sets were originally produced, but because of strong demand in Congress, an additional four hundred were struck in early 1880.” This is why the majority do not exist in such fine grades, many were carried as pocket pieces or mistreated by their non-numismatist recipients. PCGS 7, NGC 5. The last PCGS PR65 to sell brought $4,888 in an April 2010 auction. Only a PR66 is finer, and has not appeared in auction (though we note a PCGS PR67 that sold for $10,925 back in 1999 (no longer on the pop report). The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,500. Here is a GEM silver dollar sized pattern that is at a price point that most collectors interested in “dipping their toe” into patterns can afford. Good luck!
