- GREAT BRITAIN. Charles II Scottish Coronation at Scone Cast Silver Medal, 1651. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details Gold Shield.
MI-394/18; Eimer-183. Possibly by J. Balfour. Obverse: CAROLVS 2 D G SCO ANG FRA & HI REX FI DE cor i ia scon 1651, crowned and mantled bust right, wearing Chain of the Garter; Reverse: NEMO ME IMPVNE LACESSET, lion rampant, with head facing, holding thistle. A rather RAREtype, this piece features old gunmetal gray surfaces with a charming cabinet allure. Some surface marks are noted but are consistent with cast issues of the period.
Issued for Charles's Scottish coronation in 1651 in an attempt to create legitimacy toward his claim in Cromwell-led England, this interesting medal commemorates what would be the final such coronation in Scotland. Charles's attempts at the throne, though initially unsuccessful, eventually came to fruition, as the monarchy was restored at the end of the decade, with Charles ruling 25 years until being succeeded by his younger brother James (II).
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
Provenance: From the Duke of Lansing Collection.
