- 1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-111, T-11. Rarity-3. 6/Inverted 6. VF-35 (NGC). CAC.
A truly beautiful piece with subtle tangerine iridescence that blooms into sapphire and turquoise at the borders. The surfaces are generally untroubled, with just an old mark to be noted at the top of the shield and a smaller blemish in the field above the arrowheads. Inconsistency in the planchet is visible throughout the obverse, showing as microscopic fissures behind the T of LIBERTY, below the lowest curl, and elsewhere. Well struck for the variety and showing only a tinge of weakness over the rightmost cloud and wing. This is a remarkable early die state, struck prior to the formation of the cud over U of UNITED. Even so, the crack from the left wingtip into the cloud is present, as is the crack from U to the arrowheads. It was catalogued as "AU-50" in Kagin's GENA sale of September 1981 and is certainly Choice for the assigned grade.
Provenance: From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Earlier ex from Kagin's Great Eastern Numismatic Association Sale of September 1981, lot 856; Kagin's sale of February 1987, lot 3456.
NGC Census: 1; 2 finer in EF-45 (O-111 variety only).
PCGS# 6078. NGC ID: CZEY.
