- 1880 Pattern Goloid Metric Dollar. Judd-1651, Pollock-1851. Rarity-7-. Proof-66+ (PCGS). Undated (1857) Pattern Double Eagle Uniface Reverse Hub Trial. Judd-A1857-7, Pollock-3149. Rarity-7. MS-64 (PCGS). A Liberty head faces left on the obverse, the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above, the date 1880 below and 13 stars arranged at the border seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a cap inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters and ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls. On the reverse, a circle of 38 stars surrounds the inscription 15.3 - G. / 236.7 - S. / 28 - C. / 14 GRAMS. The denomination GOLOID METRIC DOLLAR is above the circle of stars and the Latin motto DEO EST GLORIA is below the circle. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is inscribed along the upper border and another expression of the denomination, 100 CENTS, is at the lower border. This reverse design is one of very few in the U.S. pattern coin series that displays the denomination in two different ways. Struck in goloid alloy (5.46% gold, 84.54% silver, 10.00% copper) with a reeded edge.<br /> There are only about a dozen examples of this type believed extant, all of which were distributed as part of goloid pattern coin sets. The example we offer here is new to market, having been sequestered in a tightly held collection of many years. It is also newly certified, going right to the top of the grading scale for PCGS and NGC certified examples of the Judd-1651 type. Simply beautiful in tone, both sides exhibit a blend of blue-gray, copper-rose and champagne-apricot colors that are nicely blended from the rims to the centers. Areas of silvery near brilliance are also intermingled here and there on the reverse. With a silky smooth sheen and radiant mint reflectivity shining forth powerfully at all angles, this coin is easily the finest example of the Judd-1651 type of which we are aware.
