- Undated (1842-1852?) August Bechtler $1 Gold. K-25. Rarity-8. 27.G., 21.C. Reeded Edge. AU-55 (PCGS). 1855 Gold Dollar. Type II. MS-62 (PCGS). The PCGS insert designates this piece as a Reeded Edge A. Bechtler gold dollar, but we are unable to examine the edge through the holder to determine the validity of this attribution. According to territorial gold specialist Don Kagin in the 1981 book Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States, the Reeded Edge variant of this type is far rarer than the Plain Edge pieces. Indeed, PCGS has currently certified only four (!) examples of the Reeded Edge variety in all grades, the present example the single highest graded in AU-55. Even olive-khaki color with sharp definition to all elements of the design. A bit of old, light surface residue is largely out of the way in isolated border areas.
