- 1855-O Liberty Eagle. EF-45 (PCGS). About as nice for the grade as any collector could hope to find. The color is natural golden-gray with a light patina from long and careful storage. Virtually full curls on Liberty boast not only of a bold strike but minimal wear. A hint of rubbing on the uppermost curls on the back of Liberty's head must have taken this down from a higher technical grade, and matching tip wear on the eagle's wing feathers confirm brief circulation at most. One of the most important factors for desirability is here in spades, that's the high quality of the surfaces, which are all but free of the usual bagmarks, scuffs and scratches so commonly seen on these mintmarked eagles. The New Orleans rounded up enough gold to manufacture 18,000 of these historic eagles, of course a minute fraction survive today, and of that group, how many could possibly have the eye appeal and quality offered here?
