- 1839 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-9. Rarity-2. Silly Head. AU-55 (PCGS). A pleasantly original and nicely patinated example of this popular head type. Primarily light chocolate brown in color with a woodgrain toning pattern on the obverse consisting of darker brown running diagonally on either side of the portrait. No contact marks of any consequence, just two small spots of oxidation, left of the date and at Liberty's brow, and some light, natural planchet roughness at the upper reverse. Interesting late die state, a meandering die crack bisects the obverse and there is a rim break at star 4 which is much stronger than normally seen thanks to a slight die misalignment to 3 o'clock.
