- 1854 Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-109. Rarity-5+. Liberty Head. MS-65 (PCGS). Highly lustrous satin surfaces are modestly semi-reflective in the fields under a light. Faint planchet streaks bisect the obverse from lower left to upper right, although both sides appear vivid medium gold color. This is a scarce variety in an absolute sense, and this high Condition Census Gem is finer than the Jay Roe specimen in PCGS MS-64 offered in our (Bowers and Merena's) September 2003 sale. Nicer, also, than the NGC MS-65 that sold as lot 3069 in our February 2014 Americana Sale. Sure to sell for a premium bid to an advanced collector of California small denomination gold.
