- 1871-CC Liberty Head Half Eagle. EF-40 (NGC).
Warmly toned in a blend of deep gold and reddish-olive, this is an very smooth and visually appealing, lightly circulated Carson City half eagle. The strike is overall bold, as well, and this example is sure to attract strong bids. In 1871 the Carson City Mint produced more than double the number of half eagles it had struck in 1870, its first year of operation. The first batch of 1871-CC half eagles (6,100 pieces) were produced in January, with an additional 14,670 coins in the second half of the year. Much like their counterparts struck earlier in Georgia and North Carolina, the gold coins struck at Carson City performed yeoman's duty in everyday commerce in the region, and did not capture the attention of numismatists of the era. Almost all known examples are very heavily worn and sometimes damaged. With its considerable eye appeal and solid EF detail, this half eagle represents a rarely encountered opportunity for advanced Carson City specialists.
