- Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 8a.3-Da.5, W-11500. Rarity-6. Copper. Martlet Alone Below King. VF-30 (PCGS).
A visually pleasing and overall boldly defined Choice VF example of the scarce Breen variety of the type. The obverse impression is tight to the upper left, reverse to 12 o'clock, although only the border is affected on the former side, tops of the letters CAT in QVIESCAT on the latter. All design elements remain bold, and many of the finer details are still quite sharp, and uncommonly so for a St. Pats "farthing" that saw this extensive circulation. The reverse is a tad rough with even ruddy-brown patina, the obverse smoother with blended medium and steel-brown toning. There are no marks of consequence on either side. The obverse has a faint, yet discernible brass plug nicely centered on the crown. A number of examples from the 8a.3-Da.5 die pairing are listed in Syd Martin's 2018 census, including several in the author's collection, as well as this piece graded VF-35 by Martin.
Provenance: From the Bill Gleckler Collection.
PCGS# 42.
