1871-CC Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 1-A. EF-45 (NGC). 1900 Liberty Half Eagle. Proof-61 Cameo (NGC). Second of only 19 CC-mint issues in the United States half eagle series, the 1871-CC is probably the most obtainable of the 1870-1873 Carson City Mint coins of the type. This is definitely a scarce issue in an absolute sense, of course, with Doug Winter and Jim Halperin (<em>Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint</em>, 2001) accounting for a mere 140-150 survivors in all grades. Generally well struck for an early 1870s CC-mint five, the only mentionable lack of detail is confined to the central highpoints. The surfaces are quite smooth for the grade, and pretty reddish-rose peripheral highlights further enhance the appeal of this desirable Choice EF.
