- Undated (1688) American Plantations Token, or 1/24 Part Real. Newman 4-E, W-1155. Rarity-4+. Seven Harpstrings. Restrike. MS-63+ (PCGS).
142.8 grains. Bright and lustrous, one of the prettiest and best preserved examples of this ca. 1828 restrike issue we can recall seeing. Light silver gray with good frost and a bold, centered strike. Exceptionally well detailed on both sides, with no evidence of tin pest anywhere. A light scratch under ART of PART on the reverse is the only defect worth mentioning. It’s interesting to note that a restrike American Plantation token is older than an original Mott token. Despite being made for collectors, very few have been preserved like this one. Among the three varieties known to exist in restrike form, this is both the second scarcest and the second most common.
Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.
PCGS Population: 2; 1 finer (MS-64).
PCGS #52
