- 1853 Round 50 Cents. BG-416. Rarity-7-. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS).
Satiny in texture with faint semi-reflective qualities evident in the fields at direct viewing angles. Color is a light, even honey-gold, the strike sharp in all but a few isolated areas. BG-416 is a prized rarity among Period I half dollars in this series. The issue is attributed to maker M. Deriberpie; it was discovered by Kenneth W. Lee, and first published by him in 1970. Bob Leonard listed 11 examples in this census published in 2003, with the usual caution, "This list probably contains a duplicate or two." In that year we (Bowers and Merena) cataloged the Jay Roe specimen in PCGS MS-60 as a "definite Condition Censusexample of a legitimate Rarity-7 variety." Such a comment is even more applicable to the Choice Mint State coin offered here which, indeed, numbers among the two finest certified by PCGS. One of several highly significant California small denomination gold offerings in this sale, and worthy of the strongest bids.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
PCGS Population: 1; 1 finer (MS-64).
PCGS# 10452. NGC ID: 2BK5.
