- NETHERLANDS. Haarlem. Silver Typography Medal, 1740. NGC MS-63.
Van Loon-147. Commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of the alleged inventor of typography, Laurens Janszoon Coster. By Holtzhey. Obverse: Bust of Coster facing slightly left, and surrounded by books, a lamp, an ouroboros, a laurel wreath, and a printing press; Reverse: Fama flying left, trumpeting and carrying the printed word; below, crowned coat-of-arms, with leonine supporters and set upon fasces crossed in saltire. An alluring specimen, this piece features an intense cabinet tone and wondrous palette, with hints of cobalt and burgundy blending beautifully throughout. An underlying radiance further entices, while the bold strike offers exceptional relief. On par with a PCGS SP-63, which realized a hammer of $1,100 in our 2017 ANA auction.
Alleged to have discovered typography just before Johannes Gutenberg, it is now believed that the latter did, in fact, arrive at the concept of movable type first. Nevertheless, within the Netherlands---and Haarlem in particular---the folklore around Coster is still fervently celebrated.
Estimate: $800 - $1,000.
