- Elusive 1832 Quarter Eagle
1832 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle. BD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. MS-60 (NGC).
This is a very attractive coin for the assigned grade that is worthy of serious bidder consideration. Handsome olive-gold and orange-apricot colors greet the viewer from both sides. The strike is sharp to full throughout the design, and the surfaces exhibit good luster quality at the BU grade level, the texture soft and satiny with just a trace of semi-reflectivity in the obverse field. BD Die State a/c.
As with all pre-1834 quarter eagles, the 1832 represents a significant find at all levels of preservation. The mintage was only 4,400 pieces, there being little call for coins of this denomination among contemporary gold bullion depositors. With the vast majority falling prey to melting, it should come as no surprise that most numismatic scholars accept an estimate of just 80 to 100 coins extant in all grades. Here, then, is an important coin that is likely to be of greatest interest to advanced gold type collectors seeking a Mint State example of the challenging Capped Head Left, Reduced Diameter quarter eagle.
