- 1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No Stars. Large Date. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. Blended turquoise-blue, antique-gold, and crimson patina engages frosty, sharply impressed features on both sides of this charming near-Gem. This is a short lived type coin that lacks the obverse stars -- as designed and intended, but soon the mints realized that these would wear too quickly in circulation and the stars would add considerable protection to the wide open fields, and thus were added to obverse starting in 1838 on all but the handful struck early in 1838 at the New Orleans Mint.
