- PORTUGAL. 1/2 Sao Vicente (500 Reis), ND (1521-57). Lisbon Mint. Joao III. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details.
Fr-33; Gomes-180.02. Weight: 3.85 gms. A stunning radiant example of this SCARCE gold denomination. While the flan exhibits minor waviness and numerous but faint tooling marks upon the surfaces, the coin nonetheless offers full legends and satisfying depictions of Saint Vincent and the royal shield.
Vincent, an Iberian bishop during the later Roman period, fell victim to the emperor Diocletian's persecutions during the beginning of the 4th Century A.D. Subjected to various tortures and finally cast into the sea, Vincent's body is said to have miraculously washed ashore intact, where it was recovered by fellow Christians and venerated thereafter. The saint's relics were eventually brought to Portugal, and Saint Vincent became the patron saint of Lisbon. Depicted on this coin holding a ship and palm frond, Saint Vincent seems to reference Portugal's far-flung seafaring and the global spread of Christianity that it enabled.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
