- A very rare Proof striking of the first year of Gobrecht's original, eye catching design without the obverse stars. According to Walter Breen, on June 30, 1837, Robert Patterson had the new dies installed into the press and had 30 Brilliant Proofs struck for various officials and other VIPs. Today, perhaps 25 survive, most are lower grade. Displaying generally icy smooth mirrors, the presently offered coin has a bold visual allure. The mirrors have a watery reflective nature that brings out the delicate hues that cling to the surfaces. Shades of golden-russet, olive, and pale blue are seen when rotated. A strong glass and patience does reveal a few trivial lines in the fields that account for the assigned grade, but the overall eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 8, NGC 13. Clearly the population reports show duplication of the same coin being submitted multiple times. The last one to sell realized $14,687 in our February 2015 Regency Auction. The current PCGS Price is listed at $16,000. Very rare any finer, this is an important early proof that will delight any serious Proof dime collector! Cert. Number 25300616 PCGS # 4718
