1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny. Martin 1.1-A.1, W-1214. Rarity-5. VTILE DVLCI. AU-53 (PCGS). 58.8 grains. Dark chocolate brown and bold for this scarce die pairing. The unusual spelling blunder is the key here, but also note the AMERI. abbreviation on the reverse, which appears later on the famed Sheldon-1 Large cent of 1793. Perhaps the engraver in 1793 had a coin from these dies and employed the same abbreviation on that famous Chain cent reverse. A few trivial pits are noted near the rims, typical for this later die state with the letters drawn toward the rim and bold clashing from the bust on the reverse.
