- From the South Texas Collection. Ex Lord St. Oswald. This is one of the most MAGNIFICENT 1794 large cents you will ever see! An amazing, WORLD CLASS SUPERB GEM 1794 large cent with a provenance that traces back to the time of issue! This S-59 ranks high in the condition census for the date, not just the variety. A bold cartwheel luster blazes on both sides as you rotate this GEM in a light. Ample, ORIGINAL RED color clings to the smooth, hard surfaces. The fields are devoid of any singular detracting marks, or evidence of any sort of line, contact, or other defect. Sharply struck on both sides, the devices are crisp and fully defined throughout; Liberty's hair curls are especially well separated and the eye appeal is stunning! When it comes to early coins, the Lord St. Oswald pedigree is one of the very finest. Taking a V.I.P. tour of the young United States, the English nobleman traveled throughout the states visiting with such notables as Washington, Jefferson, and others. A polymath, he was a collector of coins and medals, and during his stay in Philadelphia, he retained a number of large cents, half dollars, and a silver dollar. Each of these coins were carefully brought back to England and remained part of the property of the noble family until a 1964 Christie's sale in London. Dubbed the Lord St. Oswald Collection, it is one of the most important offerings of early coins from the early days of the republic offered overseas. From the 1964 Christie's sale, it went to Lester Merkin, Dorothy Paschal, Douglas Smith, Dr. Bob Shalowitz, Del Bland, Dr. Shalowitz, David Berg, William Freeman, John Adams, Bertram Cohen, intermediaries, the present consignor. This coin is the Breen Encyclopedia and PCGS CoinFacts Plate Coin. PCGS 7, NGC 0, CAC 4. There are three coins graded MS66+ BN at PCGS, and NONE FINER in the BN designation. There are no records for a PCGS MS66+ BN having been sold in auction, and there is enough of a glowing red color that would justify us including coins in the RB designation in our pricing data. The Adams, Halpern, Martin Logies, Jim O'Neal PCGS MS66 BN CAC sold in April 2014 for $117,625 and the Naftzger-Pogue PCGS MS66 RB sold for $211,500 in March 2017. Today, in MS66+ BN, the Collector's Universe value is listed at $225,000. Where this impressive SUPERB GEM hammers at will be determined by the collectors who battle it out to the end. With its amazing look, high end quality, and excellent pedigree, there is no doubt we will see fierce bidding and a very strong price realized. Bound for a great early type set or a WORLD CLASS cabinet of early copper. Good luck! Cert. Number 25349026 PCGS # 901374
