- 1870 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-930, Pollock-1035. Rarity-7+. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64 BN (NGC). CAC. From the popular Standard Silver series of patterns. Obverse with William Barber's seated Liberty to left with billowing drapery, holding shield with raised LIBERTY on ribbon, liberty pole and cap, 13 stars around, date below, reverse with bold agricultural wreath, STANDARD above, 50 / CENTS within on two lines. Deep chocolate brown with rich and fiery mint orange in the protected areas. The design is crisply presented with bold details throughout -- for the record, this design is far and away the present writer's (FVV) favorite creation by Barber. One of just five examples of J-930 certified by NGC, three at Proof-64 BN as here, one at Proof-66 BN, and one at Proof-65 RB. The uspatterns.com website suggests that fewer than a dozen examples of the variety are currently known. A choice and pleasing specimen that stands up well to magnified examination.
