详细说明: 1844-O Liberty Head Eagle. Winter-4. AU-50 (PCGS). Richly original color in deep honey-olive is seen on both sides of this premium example. Crisply impressed with razor sharp striking detail throughout, and displaying plenty of luster that is frosty to modestly semi-prooflike. Quite well preserved with abundant eye appeal, even the most discerning Southern gold enthusiast will be impressed by this noteworthy AU coin. Despite its status as one of the more readily obtainable New Orleans Mint issues from the early Liberty Head eagle series, the 1844-O is scarce in AU and very rare in Mint State. This PCGS AU-50 marks a significant offering for advanced collectors specializing in New Orleans Mint coinage or Liberty Head eagles. The Winter-4 die pairing is that which the New Orleans Mint used to strike the Parmelee Proof 1844-O eagle. In the 2020 edition of his reference Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, author Doug Winter describes this die pairing as unique to that special coin. We are aware of at least two circulation strikes from these dies, however, the Fairmont specimen offered here and the PCGS AU-58 example sold as lot 3340 in Heritage's December 2019 Signature Auction.
