- Sheffield Collection. Mintage: 3244. 8 graded AU-55, 5 higher at NGC. The very low emission leads directly to severely limited supply of the 1878-CC ten in all grades. By that year, all of the mints were placing emphasis on production of the new "Bland" dollars (i.e., the Morgan dollar), helping to explain why gold coin production was so neglected, especially in Carson City. Even well-circulated examples are very difficult to locate, with choice AU (and better) coins just about non-existent. Clashed dies struck this example, and the effects of die-to-die contact may have limited how much detail could be produced, as there is some softness in the wings and talons, as well as Liberty's hair -- not entirely explained by only five points of circulation. The reverse also shows subtle signs of strike-doubling at the tips of the wings and especially at "ATES OF A". The surfaces here are actually not as abraded as is often seen for competing examples, and evidence suggests the coin has not been drastically cleaned; witness some carbon sprinkles on the obverse, especially at the ear.
