- 1867 Gold Dollar. Proof-65 Ultra Cameo (NGC). CAC. The absolute and condition rarity of this proof Gold Dollar, as well as its importance to advanced collectors, is summed up nicely by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth in the 2008 edition of the book Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933:

Although the mintage is quite a bit higher than the previous couple of years, the 1867 gold dollar is actually much scarcer. Just four coins have crossed the auction block in the last decade. The population reports also reflect the coins' true rarity. Of the few examples offered, most were less than gem in quality. The Trompeter coin was PF-63 at best, and the Riordan/Suwanee coin is only NGC PF-64.

Clearly a superior example of this rare and conditionally challenging proof gold issue, this lovely Gem sports overall smooth, minimally marked surfaces. Gleaming yellow-gold color is most attractive, as is a boldly cameoed finish that contrasts frosty devices against mirrored fields. Fully struck, and from a mintage of only 50 proof 1867 Gold Dollars, many examples of which are believed to have been melted as unsold in the Mint.
