- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-9, W-500. Rarity-5. IN at Bottom. VG-8 (NGC). 65.3 grains. The Noe-9 Oak Tree shilling features the obverse die of Noe-8 re-engraved with the second branch from the bottom long, straight and angling upward. On the reverse, two center dots between the date 1652 and the denomination XII is also a diagnostic feature for this variety. Generally well centered in strike, with several clips around the edge of the planchet to reduce this weight. This was done in the mint, and is a common attribute for many Noe-9 Oak Tree shillings. Softly struck and unevenly worn with little to no definition remaining toward the right obverse and left reverse borders. Other areas retain bold to sharp detail, including throughout nearly half of the tree in the center of the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and exhibit medium gray highlight to otherwise light golden patina.
