- 1784 Machin's Mills Related Halfpenny. Vlack 14-84A, W-8130. Rarity-5. GEORGIVS III. EF-40 (PCGS).
101.4 grains. A noteworthy example of this intriguing variety. Vlack 14-84A is not properly a Machin's Mills/Atlee product, but has been collected with the series ever since it was included on the 1974 Vlack Plate, when it was considered Rarity-8. Though it bears little resemblance to the work of any of the die engravers associated with Machin's Mills, its distinctively crude appearance, unusual date, inclusion in the Red Book, and widespread acceptance in American colonial collections have all resulted in its enduring desirability and popularity. The present specimen is among the best we have ever offered. It is not far off from the EF-45 (PCGS) E Pluribus Unum Collection coin we sold in November 2020, lot 4164. Golden brown surfaces retain subtle traces of mint gloss and the presence of delicate die finishing lines under the bust speak to the level of preservation. Rather weakly struck but there is little actual wear. The texture is slightly rough due to the crude fabric of the original planchet which did not fully smooth out upon strike. This characteristic is as-made and typical of the variety. There is nothing in the way of circulation marks or environmental damage to report and the overall appearance is quite satisfying. This is the second finest of 12 graded at PCGS for the date.
Provenance: From the Norman G. Peters Collection.
PCGS# 935.
