- The Small Date 1857 large cent was struck in Proof format only. The mintage is listed in places at 238, and about 100 are known in all designations and grades according to PCGS CoinFacts. The present example has a flashy, highly reflective near-GEM! Icy blue, soft olive, and steely-brown/tan patina are brought out boldly by the underlying mirrored brilliance. The fields are sleek, clean, and offer strong depth of reflection. The devices show razor sharp definition on both sides, adding to the exceptional visual allure. Only 238 Proofs were struck. PCGS 15, NGC 7, CAC 2. The most recent PCGS PR64 BN to sell was NOT CAC and sold for $5,520 in September 2021. This CAC-approved beauty should sell closer to the $6,750 Collectors Universe value.
