- 1788 Vermont Copper. RR-18, Bressett 19-X, W-2135. Rarity-4. Bust Right, *ET LIB* *INDE. VF-25.
112.7 grains. Overstruck on a contemporary counterfeit halfpenny. Deep golden-tan surfaces are pleasing to the naked eye but exhibit a uniform microgranular appearance under low magnification. Obverse perfectly centered, die crack across the coin from rim to rim at 1 to 7 o'clock as virtually always seen, undertype prominent among the peripheral legend, natural faint planchet lamination at AUC, raised area from an attempted puncture at CT, no other marks of note, reverse perfectly centered, host coin details throughout, attempted puncture at the shield is the only mark of significance; if not for this, the coin would be remarkably blemish-free. The weight of the present coin falls somewhere between Carlotto's "light thin planchets" category of 75 to 85 grains and his "heavier types" category of 115 to 125 grains. Choice for the grade despite the obvious, and a coin that will be a centerpiece representative of the variety in a growing Vermont copper collection.
PCGS# 569.
Provenance: From the Dan Freidus Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova at an undisclosed date. Paper envelope with attribution notes included.
