PHILIPPINES. Mint Error -- Muled with 20 Centavos Reverse -- 5 Centavos, 1918-S. San Francisco Mint. PCGS MS-65.
KM-164; Allen-4.08b. An amazing survivor of this legendary mint mistake, created when the reverse die for a silver 20 Centavos was paired with a 5 Centavos obverse. Because the design differences on the 20 Centavos die are relatively subtle (including a smaller date and eagle wingtips that end closer to the edge dentilation), this blunder went unnoticed for years. When finally discovered, most of the coins had already seen significant circulation, leaving few Mint State survivors. Even more amazing is this coin, the lone Gem (MS-65 or finer) example that either PCGS or NGC have graded in their over 60 years of combined certification of the series. True to its designation, the surfaces on this piece show almost no blemishes of any kind, with bold luster that radiates the designs. A mix of rich golden and pale rose tone also accompany the surfaces and impart a beautiful and unique compliment of character. All considered, an absolute trophy coin for the elite collector in the series, with accompanying "bragging rights" that will surely bestow its next owner with a sense of pride for years to come.
