Mintages of silver dollars dropped dramatically in 1893 in response to the major economic depression known as the Panic of 1893. Only 389,000 Morgan dollars fell from presses at the Philly mint that year, and Mint State coins are scarce. GEMS are rare. Frosty and brilliant, the surfaces display a satiny lustrous sheen on both sides. There is a dusting of iridescent white and soft gold in the fields that are enlivened by the cartwheels. Typical for the date, the strike is somewhat soft in the centers, primarily located in the hair definition on the curl above Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast. Minor traces of contact can be found with effort, mostly outside of the prime focal areas, and are acceptable for the grade, having little impact on the eye appeal. PCGS 251, NGC 75. The two most recent non-CAC PCGS graded examples sold for $4,440 (August 2022) and $5,040 (February 2022). The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $5,750. There are 50 (no doubt including duplication) graded higher (all but 8 are MS65+) MS66 finest. A nicely preserved GEM for the Morgan dollar collector. Cert. Number 45854778 PCGS # 7220
