- 1850 Gold Dollar. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC. OGH--First Generation. Blatantly original and simply breathtaking, this coin exhibits a smooth, satiny sheen that is virtually devoid of even trivial blemishes. Orange-gold patina is so thick and "crusty" that it seems as though one could scrape it off with a fingernail. The strike is razor sharp throughout, and the eye appeal is the strongest that this cataloger can ever remember seeing in an 1850 Gold Dollar. A small, faint toning spot at the top of Liberty's head and an equally faint planchet streak (as made) at star 6 should serve as useful pedigree markers.<br /> The 1850 is the second Philadelphia Mint issue in the Type I Gold Dollar series. Although a mintage of 481,953 pieces is respectable for the type, the 1850 is far scarcer in today's market than most other P-mint Gold Dollars from the 1850s (the high-mintage 1851, 1852 and 1853, of course, come readily to mind in this context). Superb Gems are exceedingly rare and vie for Condition Census #1 ranking. The present example is quite possibly the finest known, and the only other 1850 Gold Dollar that we know of with equally impressive credentials is the example in the personal collection of noted gold expert David W. Akers.
