- 1788 Vermont Copper. RR-31, Bressett 24-U, W-2260. Rarity-4. GEORGIVS III REX. VF-20/Good-4. 119.3 grains. Chestnut-brown with lighter high points and uniform microgranularity throughout. Obverse significantly sharper than reverse as usually seen for the variety. Obverse perfectly centered with bold dentils around the circumference, tiny old dig at top of effigy's head, no other marks available to the unaided eye, reverse weak but all details present in some form, rim through LIB and bottoms of date numerals, tiny nicks noted at bottom rim, no other marks of merit available to the unassisted eye, upset rim at top. Fairly heavy by the Carlotto weight metrology, which calls for a general class of 90 to 105 grains; however, several pieces exceed the top of the range, including this piece and a piece offered by us (Stack's) in 1993 that weighed in at a whopping 137.8 grains. Scarcer in appearances than the Rarity-4 rating suggests, no doubt owing to the demand for this unusual Machin's Mills muling. PCGS# 572. Provenance: From the Dan Freidus Collection.
