The 1902 Barber half is a major condition rarity in the series. Despite a large mintage of 4,922,000, these clearly disappeared into circulation where they would stay until they were worn down. Today, GEM Mint State pieces are rare, and anything finer than MS65 is VERY RARE. Fewer than ten survive in MS66 or finer. We like the look of this MS66 quite a bit. The highly lustrous, satiny surfaces are awash in a gentle blue and amber-gold patina, which glows when rotated in a light. Sharply struck devices stand out in bold relief against the satiny smooth fields. There are a couple of very minor scattered marks on this coin, most notable a minor line on Liberty's cheek. The eye appeal is excellent! PCGS 5, NGC 5. The last two PCGS-graded examples sold in a weaker market, back in 2016 and were CAC approved, selling for $7,344 and $4,935. Prior to that you have to go back to 2008 to find an example in this grade! Note: the one that sold for $4,935 subsequently upgraded to MS66+ and sold for $10,281 in our May 2018 Regency Auction. Today the PCGS Price Guide lists a value of $6,500. We think this lovely GEM will see very spirited bidding and placement in a fantastic set of Barber halves. Good luck! Cert.
