- 1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. O-120, T-28. Rarity-3. Pointed 6, Stem Through Claw. EF-45 (NGC).
A brilliant and remarkably frosty piece displaying just a touch of charcoal patina at the lower left reverse. The surfaces are smooth and unblemished under magnification, with only a microscopic pinscratch near Liberty's bust to be noted. This obverse die had been employed in 4 prior marriages and evidence of clashing is dramatic. An impression from the eagle's tail shows clears at Liberty's head, and outlines of the clouds are distinct around the date. Additionally, a network of cracks links the left stars to LIBERTY. The reverse die shows a crack at AM of AMERICA but is still in an early state, free from the large cud that forms at the shield that distinguishes the O-120a variety. An attractive example with strong appeal to specialists.
Provenance: From the Sutton Court Collection of Early Half Dollar Varieties. Acquired privately from Don Frederick, January 1986.
NGC Census: 4; 10 finer (O-120 variety only).
PCGS# 39325. NGC ID: 24EJ.
