- The 1861-D is a famous numismatic rarity. Other than the super-rare (and largely uncollectible) 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar, this is the scarcest coin in the entire series. Serious numismatists and Confederate historians agree that the real claim to fame for this issue lies in the fact that it is the only official U.S. coin to be struck under Confederate control. The rebel forces seized the mint in Dahlonega, Georgia in early 1861 and struck approximately 1,000 specimens, but experts believe that fewer than 75 coins exist today. This particular example is a wholesome Fine 12 with a pleasant among of detail and lovely rich sunny golden color. Most examples of this date appear in AU grades, making an "affordable" issue somewhat of an unusual find. The number one set possesses the finest known PCGS MS64+ example from the Simpson Collection.
