- Popular Maris 40-b Llama Head Variety
1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 40-b, W-5200. Rarity-5+. Llama Head. VF-25 (PCGS).
159.9 grains. Almost certainly overstruck on a Connecticut copper, with a bit of the cuirass visible under BUS of PLURIBUS on the reverse. Nice light brown with splashes of mahogany and a bit of darker encrustation within the letters on the reverse. Scattered marks and pits are seen, the largest of which is in the lower right obverse field, but the surfaces are mostly hard and glossy. A rim nick above E of E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse is mostly hidden by the holder, and a few light scratches cross the horse's muzzle. The Llama head device and the shield are both nice and bold, and the eye appeal is excellent overall. Die State 2, with a closed loop on the R of CAESAREA.
This is an unusually charismatic variety, one with a distinctive horsehead, broad planchets, unusual undertypes, and a lot of basic rarity to recommend it. The November 2019 EPU sale included a superb F-15 (PCGS) that brought $7,200. The Craige-Martin coin is the only VF or better example from these dies we've offered in the last decade. Graded VF-30 (PCGS) and blessed with an unusual undertype (a 1780-H French sou), it brought $31,200 last summer.
Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.
PCGS# 763335.
