- 1720-A Ecu de France. Paris Mint. Gad.319, Hod.10. Overstruck on 1718-A Ecu de Navarre. AU-50 (PCGS). 374.0 grains. Flan reforme. Deep golden gray with bright neon blue iridescence in the protected areas. The only marks seen in-hand are the outlines of the host 1718-A Ecu de Navarre. Young bust of Louis XV obverse, Royal Arms reverse. One of the famous Jean (John) Law issues, whose Company of the Indies essentially "owned" the coinage rights to the French mints from July 25, 1719 to January 5, 1721; the company was also responsible for the Mississippi Colonization Scheme. A great piece of "American" history, the present beauty will represent the design type in any cabinet of John Law issues or any advanced "colonial" coinage cabinet within which the expanse of Law's coinage overlaps the history of North America in the early days of the 18th century.
There is a minor crack in the back of the PCGS holder, mentioned for accuracy's sake.
