- 1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle. Taraszka-25, BD-2. Rarity-2. MS-63 (PCGS). OGH. A lovely and truly choice example of this popular type coin. Warm gold surfaces exhibit soft toning giving this coin the increasingly unusual appearance of true originality, which is so desired by knowledgeable collectors. Excellent luster on both sides give the coin a lively appearance and accentuate the attractive nature of the satiny surfaces. A few minor handling marks, as one would expect, though none stand out as distracting in the least to the unaided eye. Nicely struck, with good definition of nearly all design elements. This is the more available of two die varieties known for 1801 and is often selected for type coin collections as opposed to more specialized holdings based on die varieties. However, this choice example would be more than satisfactory for just about any collection as the quality and eye appeal are all there. A beautiful early eagle.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Lovely to look at and even nicer to own. If you are puzzled as to what “OGH” means, this is a trade abbreviation for “Old Green Holder,” referring to a PCGS holder from years ago when, it is said, as a rule grading was more conservative than it is today. Many such coins—no guarantees here—have had upgrades when resubmitted.
