- 1890 Liberty Seated Dime. Proof-66 (NGC). Lovely olive-gray patina adorns both sides and deepens toward the borders, where more vivid golden-orange undertones are discernible when the coin is observed with the aid of a direct light. A thoroughly appealing Gem with smooth surfaces and a vibrant mint finish. From a Proof mintage for the date of just 590 pieces, the lowest Proof production run in the series after 1877. <br />
The coin market was in a slump at this time. The hobby experienced great dynamism after the nationwide sensation and publicity caused by the release in 1883 of the Liberty Head nickel without CENTS. This spurred a great increase in the number of collectors, dealers, and hobby publications. The enthusiasm continued for the best part of the decade, then wound down in the late 1880s, at which time the country was also entering an economic slump (from overspeculation in real estate in the Midwest, among other causes). In 1890 Lorin G. Parmelee put his collection on the market through the New York Coin and Stamp Company. The results were mixed, with many rarities unsold. This general slump would continue throughout the 1890s. A bright spot, however, was the formation of the American Numismatic Association in Chicago in November 1891.
